SkinNote No. 11 — Overdid the Exfoliating? How to Calm a Stressed Autumn Skin

Autumn is when many of us reach for exfoliants. After summer, skin can feel rough and uneven, and a new acid toner, peeling pad or scrub promises a fresh start. Used gently, exfoliation can help. Used too often, or stacked with other actives, it quietly works against you.

Exfoliation removes the outer layer of dead cells. That outer layer is also part of your barrier. Take away too much, too quickly, and skin loses its shield just as cold wind and heated indoor air arrive. Typical signs of over-exfoliation: products that suddenly sting, a tight face that still looks shiny, patchy redness, small bumps, or skin that feels "raw" when you apply your usual cream.

Pause, then calm

The fix is rarely another product with acids. It is a break. Stop exfoliants, retinoids and scrubs for one to two weeks, keep your routine short, and give skin something soothing to rebuild with. A calming moisturizer with a light texture works well here: comforting enough for stressed skin, light enough not to clog it.

The Dear, Klairs Midnight Blue Calming Cream is made for exactly this kind of moment. Its blue colour comes from azulene, a soothing compound from chamomile. It is paired with centella asiatica (madecassoside) and panthenol to calm and support a weakened barrier. The gel-cream texture absorbs quickly with a soft, dewy finish and no greasy film.

How to use it

  1. Cleanse gently with lukewarm water, once in the evening is enough while skin recovers.

  2. Skip exfoliants, retinoids and scrubs for one to two weeks.

  3. Pat a pea-sized amount of cream over face and neck as your last step.

  4. Use it morning and evening; add an extra thin layer on spots that sting.

  5. Reintroduce exfoliation slowly: once a week, never on the same night as other actives.

Small habits that help

  • One exfoliating product at a time is enough.

  • Pat your face dry with a clean towel; don't rub.

  • Patch-test new actives behind your ear or along your jaw first.

  • Free shipping from €40 when you fill a small autumn basket.

If burning, swelling or redness does not settle after a few days, talk to your GP or a dermatologist.

Less is often more, especially in autumn. You'll find the Midnight Blue Calming Cream and other autumn picks in our October collection.
