SkinNote No. 24 — Dry Cheeks, Shiny T-Zone: Finding Balance for Combination Skin in Autumn

If your cheeks feel tight in the morning while your forehead and nose are shiny by lunchtime, you're not imagining it. Autumn tends to make combination skin more obvious. Cold air and indoor heating dry out the areas that already have fewer oil glands, while the T-zone keeps producing oil as usual, and sometimes a bit more when the skin underneath feels dehydrated.

Why one product for everything can feel wrong

Many people react to the shine by reaching for stronger cleansers or mattifying products. The cheeks then get even drier, and the T-zone often doesn't calm down. Others switch to a rich winter cream all over, which feels lovely on the cheeks but heavy on the nose and chin. Combination skin usually does best with a light, balancing base and a little extra care only where it's needed.

A simple autumn routine for combination skin

- Cleanse gently, morning and evening. Skin shouldn't feel squeaky afterwards.

- Hydrate in light layers: a toner or essence first, then a lightweight serum.

- Use your moisturiser where you need it. A bit more on the cheeks, a thin layer on the T-zone.

- Keep extras targeted. A richer cream or a drop of oil can go on dry patches only.

Our pick: Beauty of Joseon Glow Serum: Propolis + Niacinamide

This honey-textured serum is built for exactly that balancing middle step. Propolis extract (60%) helps soothe and comfort skin, while niacinamide (vitamin B3) supports the skin barrier and helps even out tone and texture. Tea tree extract helps keep pores and excess oil in check, and panthenol and royal jelly extract add hydration and softness. It sinks in quickly, so it works under both a light gel and a richer cream.

How to use it

  1. After cleansing and toner, apply 2–3 drops to your face and neck.

  2. Pat it in gently until absorbed.

  3. Follow with your moisturiser: more on dry areas, less on the T-zone.

You can use it morning and evening. In the morning, finish with sunscreen as usual. If you are sensitive to bee products such as honey or propolis, patch test first on a small area.

A gentle reminder

Combination skin isn't two problems to fight. It's one skin with different needs in different places. Keep the base gentle and light, add comfort where it feels tight, and give it a couple of weeks before judging the result.
