SkinNote No. 18 — Heating Season: How to Use a Face Mist So It Actually Helps

The heating has gone on in most Dutch homes and offices by now. It feels cosy, but warm indoor air is usually dry air, and your skin notices. By mid-afternoon your cheeks can feel dry, makeup starts to look a little flat, and it's tempting to reach for a face mist again and again.

Why a mist on its own can backfire

A spray of water feels lovely for a few seconds. But if that water just sits on your skin and evaporates, it can take some of your skin's own moisture with it, and you end up feeling drier than before. That's why it matters what's in the mist and what you do right after spraying.

Pat, then seal

Hold the bottle about 20–30 cm from your face, close your eyes and mist evenly. Then gently pat it in with your fingertips until it's absorbed, rather than letting it air-dry. At home, follow with your serum or moisturiser while your skin is still slightly damp; a cream on top helps keep that hydration where it belongs. Two or three sprays are plenty.

When to use it

After cleansing, as a light first layer before the rest of your routine. Between layers, if your serum feels like it's dragging on dry skin. And during the day at your desk, over makeup, whenever your skin feels dry. You don't need to mist every hour; a couple of times a day is usually enough.

Our pick: COSRX Ceramide Skin Barrier Moisturizing Mist

This isn't just water in a spray bottle. It combines a ceramide complex with cholesterol and fatty acids, the same kinds of lipids your skin barrier is built from, plus panthenol, glycerin and allantoin to hydrate and soothe. The mist is fine and light, so it won't disturb your makeup. It's made for dry and sensitive skin, which is exactly the skin that tends to struggle most once the radiators are on.

A few gentle tips

Keep a small glass of water on your desk as well; your skin isn't the only thing the heating dries out. Shake the bottle before each use. And if your skin still feels uncomfortable at night, look at your moisturiser first; a mist supports your routine, it doesn't replace your cream.

You'll find the COSRX Ceramide Skin Barrier Moisturizing Mist in our shop, an easy little helper for the heating season.
