By mid-October most routines have shifted a little: a gentler cleanser, a richer cream, maybe an essence. Yet some skin still feels tight by the afternoon, especially on the cheeks. That's often the moment people wonder about face oil, and also the moment they worry it will feel greasy or clog their pores.
What a face oil actually does
Hydrating products such as toners and essences add water to the skin. An oil does something different: it softens the surface and forms a light film that helps slow down how quickly that water evaporates. In autumn, when heated indoor air pulls moisture from your skin, that extra layer can make the difference between skin that feels comfortable all day and skin that feels tight again by lunch.
Where it goes in your routine
Think "thin to thick". Cleanse, then toner, essence or serum, and then a few drops of oil, either just before or mixed into your moisturiser. In the morning, sunscreen always comes last. If your skin is on the oily side, try the oil at night only, or add one drop to your cream instead of using it as a separate step.
How much is enough
Two to three drops for your whole face. Warm them between your palms and press them gently onto skin that's still slightly damp from your previous step; there's no need to rub. If your face looks shiny ten minutes later, use one drop less next time.
Our pick: Dear, Klairs Fundamental Watery Oil Drop
This is an oil that doesn't feel like one: a light, watery texture that absorbs quickly and leaves a soft, dewy finish instead of a greasy one. It contains squalane, a lightweight emollient similar to the skin's own oils, plus jojoba seed oil and sunflower seed oil, which help support the skin barrier. It suits dry, dehydrated and combination skin, and sensitive skin that needs a little extra comfort when the weather turns.
A few gentle tips
Start with a few evenings a week and see how your skin responds. On very dry days, mix a drop into your moisturiser for extra comfort. And if a new spot appears, look at your whole routine first; one change at a time makes it easier to see what works for you.
You'll find the Dear, Klairs Fundamental Watery Oil Drop in our shop, a small final step for skin that wants a little more this season.
