Key K-Beauty Ingredients Explained

Snail mucin, centella asiatica, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid — what do they actually do? A plain-language guide to the most popular K-beauty actives.

Korean skincare has introduced the world to some of the most effective and innovative ingredients in modern beauty. Here's a breakdown of the most commonly found K-beauty actives and what they actually do for your skin.

Snail Mucin (Snail Secretion Filtrate)

Collected humanely from snails, snail mucin is packed with glycoproteins, hyaluronic acid, and copper peptides. It accelerates skin cell regeneration, fades acne scars and hyperpigmentation, and deeply hydrates without feeling heavy. It's suitable for almost every skin type, including sensitive skin.

Best for: Dull skin, acne scars, dehydration, loss of firmness.

Centella Asiatica (Cica)

Also known as tiger grass, centella asiatica is a medicinal herb with powerful anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties. It calms redness, repairs a damaged skin barrier, and soothes irritation caused by over-exfoliation or environmental stressors. It's a K-beauty staple for sensitive and acne-prone skin.

Best for: Redness, sensitivity, barrier damage, acne-prone skin.

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)

One of the most versatile actives in skincare, niacinamide regulates sebum production, minimises the appearance of pores, fades dark spots and post-acne hyperpigmentation, and strengthens the skin barrier. It's water-soluble, stable, and well-tolerated by most skin types — including sensitive skin.

Best for: Oily skin, large pores, uneven skin tone, dark spots.

Hyaluronic Acid

A naturally occurring molecule in the skin, hyaluronic acid can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. It draws moisture from the environment into the skin and keeps it there, resulting in visibly plumper, smoother skin. Apply to damp skin for best results — dry air can draw moisture out of the skin if there's no water source to pull from.

Best for: All skin types, dehydration, fine lines, plumping.

Fermented Ingredients

Fermentation is a distinctly Korean approach to skincare. The fermentation process breaks down large molecules into smaller ones that are more easily absorbed by the skin, while also increasing the concentration of antioxidants and beneficial nutrients. Look for fermented yeast extracts, rice ferment filtrates, and bifida ferment lysate on ingredient lists.

Best for: Brightening, anti-ageing, boosting absorption of other products.

Ginseng

Ginseng root has been used in Korean medicine for thousands of years. In skincare, it promotes collagen synthesis, improves skin elasticity, and delivers antioxidant protection against free radical damage. Red ginseng extract is particularly prized for its anti-ageing properties.

Best for: Mature skin, loss of firmness, dullness, antioxidant protection.

Rice Extract

Rice water and rice extract have long been a beauty secret in East Asia. Rich in ferulic acid, vitamins B and E, and inositol, rice extract brightens the complexion, evens skin tone, and gently exfoliates for a smoother, more luminous finish.

Best for: Brightening, uneven skin tone, softening texture.
