Double cleansing is the cornerstone of Korean skincare. Learn why washing your face twice — with two different cleansers — makes all the difference.
Double cleansing is exactly what it sounds like: cleansing your face twice, using two different types of cleanser in sequence. It is the first and arguably most important step in Korean skincare, and once you try it, it's hard to go back to a single cleanse.
Your skin collects two types of impurities throughout the day:
A single cleanser struggles to remove both effectively. Oil-based impurities repel water-based cleansers, leaving residue behind. Double cleansing solves this by using the right tool for each job.
Apply the oil cleanser to dry skin and massage gently for 60 seconds. The oil dissolves sunscreen, makeup, and excess sebum. When you add water, it emulsifies and rinses clean without leaving a greasy film. Popular formats include cleansing oils, cleansing balms, and micellar oils.
Follow immediately with a gentle, low-pH water-based cleanser. This removes any remaining residue from the oil cleanser, plus sweat and water-based impurities. Your skin should feel clean but not tight or dry after rinsing.
Double cleanse every evening — this is when your skin has accumulated a full day of SPF, makeup, and pollutants. In the morning, a single rinse with water or a gentle water-based cleanser is usually sufficient, as your skin hasn't been exposed to the same level of impurities overnight.
Choose gentle formulas for both steps. Harsh cleansers — regardless of how thoroughly they clean — can damage your skin barrier, leading to dryness, sensitivity, and breakouts. Look for pH-balanced formulas (around 5.0–6.5) to keep your barrier intact.
